In a statement released Monday, the 83-year-old Grammy winner said, \u201cThe truth is, I\u2019ve been learning how to live with Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d adding that she took time before speaking publicly as she adjusted to the diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Simon <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/story\/carly-simon-writes-moving-letter-about-parkinsons-diagnosis\/?\">said her health concerns<\/a> first appeared after severe arthritis required hip and knee replacement surgeries. Although those procedures addressed her joint problems, her mobility continued to decline, prompting further testing at the Mayo Clinic, where doctors diagnosed Parkinson\u2019s disease. She described the condition as unpredictable, noting, \u201cParkinson\u2019s is different for everyone, and it can be unpredictable. Some days I\u2019m so tired I can\u2019t get the day moving at all. On others, it gives me a little more room to move, think, work, and feel like myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At around the same time, Simon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/carly-simon-parkinsons-diagnosis-skin-cancer\/\">underwent successful surgery<\/a> to remove basal cell carcinoma from her face. While the cancer was treated, she acknowledged the procedure left her feeling self-conscious about appearing in public, further contributing to her low profile in recent years. Despite those setbacks, Simon said she remains active creatively and has continued writing and recording music throughout her recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Simon also revealed that music has provided a sense of purpose as she navigates her diagnosis. Her upcoming album, <em>Comes in Waves,<\/em> scheduled for release on Aug. 14, will be her first collection of original material since 2008.
